Wellbeing is defined as the state of being comfortable, healthy, or happy. But we all know there's more to it than that. It's about liking what you do each day, achieving your goals, having supportive relationships, feeling safe, being healthy, and having energy. At Dekker/Perich/Sabatini, we advocate for work-life balance and integrate wellness in the workplace.
We designed our headquarters at Jefferson Green in 2007 to support our growing needs in a healthy and sustainable way. Part of that meant designing our office to achieve LEED Gold and having an open office concept that enhances daylight, views, and collaboration. The other ongoing part of promoting health and wellness in the workplace is to offer a variety of personal enrichment classes right here in our office. Why do we do this? Because we are proponents of office design that supports wellbeing, and we want to improve engagement, productivity, health outcomes, and happiness for our employees.
As part of our wellness initiative, we provide in-house yoga and fitness classes.
Intern architect Greg Everett teaches evening yoga after 5 p.m. so employees can easily incorporate yoga into their work schedules. In nice spring, summer, and fall weather, yoga classes take place outside under the cottonwood trees - converting our picnic and barbeque deck into a yogi paradise. In colder weather, mats are brought indoors.
For the past three years, we've offered free weekly fitness classes, turning our largest conference room into a free-weight gym. This gives participants a chance to get up and move at the end of the day, with the added bonus of giving people something to do while they wait out 5 o'clock traffic. We're currently enjoying Cardio Fusion taught by instructors from local fitness gyms.
Fitness reimbursements for employees who seek alternative activities are also available. And we have discounts for memberships to Defined Fitness and Sports & Wellness to accommodate multiple interests and lifestyles.
Thanks to Carolyn Laarkamp, our HR Director, we've been able to organize a variety of other wellness programs: biometric screenings, flu shots, nutrition courses, and cooking classes.
Other D/P/S members have coordinated more personal enrichment activities, including a recent strength assessment luncheon. And our dedicated team of "party planners" schedules fun events throughout the year, especially around holidays.
We strongly believe in supporting a fun and rewarding work experience. From making our environments healthier through sustainable design to increasing opportunities through flexible layouts, the workplace can become more than just a place to work. We can create places to learn, to have fun, to contribute, and to live well.
