TTU Industrial Engineering Relocation

DPS recently completed the first phase of this 42,000sf renovation project, relocating the Industrial Engineering department into a partially vacated 1970's classroom building on the engineering campus. TTU engaged DPS and a CMAR for this project in order to accomplish the fast-track second floor renovation: 10 months from programming to occupancy. The DPS team initiated intensive programming with faculty representatives and the TTU Facilities, Planning and Construction project manager. The diverse program includes faculty offices and collaboration spaces, classroom, graduate student workspace, student lounge and small wet laboratory. The vision for the project was to create a modern, professional environment that reflects the state of the art in industrial engineering. The program is heavily slanted toward graduate student studies, so developing collaborative workspace for those students was important in recruiting and retaining talent.

The design and construction team worked hand-in-hand from the start – selective demolition was completed during design so physical constraints could inform the design. Ceilings were removed wherever possible and the existing concrete floors polished to create an industrial aesthetic. The team used existing and new three dimensional wall panels to highlight the public areas and added extensive glazing to the graduate student areas to promote transparency. Skylights were added in the two main stairwells and additional windows were added to the exterior of the building to increase the natural light in the space. The dated faculty office space was transformed into a collaborative environment for students and faculty alike.
