A roof to heal under

Rust Medical Center

Rust Medical Center Master Plan, prepared by Dekker Perich Sabatini, has planned for a 60-acre phased construction of 1.1 million square feet of comprehensive acute care hospital with 400 inpatient beds and 300,000sf of outpatient clinic space.

To date, two phases of the hospital are complete consisting of over 615,000sf of acute care space, 210 beds, and 100,000sf of outpatient clinic space. A central plant allows for current and future phases. It was designed as a "plug-and-play" format to minimize disruption to existing operations during future expansion.

The Master Facility concept employs a design for high performance by utilizing sustainable design principles, a challenge for a typically energy consumptive building type.

The design is also based on principles to increase functional efficiency and incorporate the latest, proven techniques to foster healing and well-being, such as daylighting and views, acoustical privacy, and friendly, but easily maintained finishes.

DPS minimized infection control concerns and improved health outcomes by using rapid prototyping and mockups in the early design process. These evidence-based design approaches allowed the design team and Presbyterian staff to run through various patient scenarios quickly, specifically in the patient rooms. From this effort, the team strategically designed the space to both maximize staff efficiency and support patients and their families. Examples of ideas that were implemented into the final design based on the prototyping process include: moving headwall med/gases to either side of the patient bed, instead of directly behind the patient, and zoning the room to provide dedicated staff space and family space to increase efficiency and improve patient care.

The design is also based on principles to increase functional efficiency and incorporate the latest, proven techniques to foster healing.

Phase 1 of Rust Medical Center is a five-story, full-service, private, 92-bed hospital with an adjacent 100,000sf Physician Office Building. With innovation and patient-centered care as key goals of Presbyterian Healthcare Services (PHS), and after extensive case study visits, the design team and PHS conducted visioning sessions involving stakeholders representing management and key departments.

Phase 2 expansion includes a six-story, patient tower with 120 patient beds, four operating rooms, medical and radiation cancer treatment, and infusion services, and healing gardens. This phase was constructed while the existing hospital remained fully operational. It was accomplished, in part, by the hospital's "plug-and-play" Master Plan, which enables additional bed towers added with minimal disruption to normal operations.

To date, both phases have utilized construction manager at risk, with accelerated (fast-track) construction document package release. This approach has allowed the owner to decrease overall project delivery times while managing tight budgets.
