Renovation with a salute to history

NMMI Lusk Hall

The extensive renovation of Lusk Hall, a 1940s era building on the New Mexico Military Institute campus, began with a review of existing facility conditions, interviews of current and future occupants, and an initial report analyzing the feasibility of renovating Lusk Hall to improve space efficiencies, address code issues, and incorporate functional and aesthetic building upgrades. The team studied several reconfiguration schemes based on facility observations compared to programmatic needs. Based on this study, Dekker Perich Sabatini performed extensive interior renovations to address life safety and accessibility issues, meet programmatic needs, and renew building systems.

The renovation consists of a complete demolition of all interior elements down to basic structure, addition of an elevator serving all floors, reroofing, completely new mechanical, electrical, plumbing and special systems, and the build out of new administrative spaces serving six different departments. The renovation provides a modern working environment that includes reuse of original stair railing elements and vault doors. Healthy materials and energy efficient components were used throughout, and the project has achieved USGBC's LEED Silver certification.
