Mariposa Community Center

Given a dramatic landscape and backdrop, the Mariposa development sought to preserve the natural terrain of rolling hills and high desert. By maintaining views, creating gathering areas, establishing a high desert color palette, and incorporating both historical architecture of the Southwest and modern building elements, Mariposa Community Center provides a functional environment and reinforces the Mariposa Town Center vision.

The center is designed to reinforce a sustainable and pedestrian-oriented community. An informal plaza and low wall planter distinguish the entry plaza from the street and directs patrons to the entrance, which also serves as outdoor seating for a cafe. Vast skies, mountain views, and endless horizons are the backdrop to gathering areas and walkways lined with wild grasses, pinon trees, shrubs, and wildflowers.

The main activity areas, such as the fitness center, multi-purpose room, and the indoor pool, create an engaging street edge. The outdoor pool sets within a gradual hillside slope and retaining walls further define the space, creating seclusion without hindering views of the natural surroundings.

The center is designed to reinforce a sustainable and pedestrian-oriented community.

Interior materials like rustic plaster, solid hardwood flooring, and colored concrete provide durability and warmth. With forms reminiscent of kivas and vernacular colors, the design creates a strong sense of place and a fresh interpretation of the New Mexico style.
