The redevelopment of Jefferson Middle School is focused on the phased construction of a new building addition and the renovation of existing classrooms to meet district standards and accommodate growth in the student population. Because the school remained open and operational during construction, the addition and renovation were developed in two phases.
The first phase focused on creating a new music building with band, orchestra, and “Rock & Rhythm” classrooms to meet the needs of an active music program unique to the school. The old music building was then renovated to house art and adaptive PE, an obsolete vocational building was demolished and removed, and site improvements created a new central courtyard, new visitor parking, and improved access to the kitchen.
The addition and renovation was collaboratively designed with input from students, faculty, community, and APS FD&C officials to conform to the district's Planning Standards and meet the school's needs. In total, the first phase includes a 4,435sf addition and 3,900sf of renovated space.
The second phase will include a 29,463sf addition with eight new classrooms, a new administration with a secured single main entry, and science and special education classrooms. The new building will connect the new music classrooms to the existing facility, completing the encapsulation of a protected central courtyard.
The remaining 8,422sf renovations will produce a new centrally-located computer lab, dedicated science lab, and larger classrooms. Other areas in the existing school will be repurposed to accommodate teacher home base rooms and classrooms. Remaining site improvements to the central courtyard, correction of drainage issues, and replacement of outdoor student areas will complete the site work.
The renovated campus will be able to serve a projected population of 870 students, about 350 students more than the existing campus. Facility improvements were designed with sensitivity to the historical character of the original building to result in a cohesive campus that can serve the community long into the future.
