Opening new doors to treatment

Rust Medical Center | Physician Office Building

Rust Medical Center's new Physician Office Building afforded the entire design team an opportunity to revisit and update the previously completed master plan.

Changes in market forces had led to changes in earlier assumptions, and the team ended up refreshing the master plan for the outpatient portion of the site and successfully obtained approvals for the update through the City of Rio Rancho. The final result enhances the zoning of the campus into inpatient and outpatient areas, improves large-scale visibility and wayfinding, and adjusts the center of gravity for arrivals and parking for the two types of uses.

The Physician Office Building reflects the continued realization of the long-term master plan for the campus and re-orients the Rust site to a new entry for day surgery and clinics. The placement of the building takes advantage of spectacular views of the Sandia mountains while creating a sheltered 'courtyard' for parking and a healing garden.

The building is organized around the new Outpatient entry, highlighted with a prominent stair inviting visitors to enjoy the mountain views and natural light from each level. A daylit concourse provides clear and legible wayfinding for patients circulating along this spine, giving spectacular views to the waiting rooms.

The flagship tenant will be an eight OR Ambulatory Surgical Center and a separately licensed GI Lab with five procedure rooms.

The new building provides several one-stop service lines for patients making their experience calmer and easier to navigate.
