Education
An education grounded in tradition
Laguna Elementary School
The design of this new school reflects the values and culture of Laguna Pueblo while following BIA guidelines for spaces, materials, and durability.
The design team worked closely with community members, pueblo elders, and cultural experts on siting, layout, and key design details such as outdoor gathering areas and the design of cultural classrooms with plastered walls, a kiva fireplace, and a traditional beamed ceiling.
The new elementary school is sited to capture panoramic views while relating to the existing middle school and connecting indoor and outdoor learning environments.
The new school is LEED Silver certified and will create a healthy learning environment with ample daylight and healthy materials. This Design/Build project has been honored by BIA as a "Model of Success Project" for the seamless collaboration of the design and construction team members, and success of the fast-track schedule which integrated BIA review milestones with multiple construction packages.
