Education

Becoming empaths and osteopaths

Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine

The Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM) is a first-of-its-kind, privately funded medical school located on the campus of New Mexico State University (NMSU). The new state-of-the-art building welcomed its inaugural class of 162 students in August 2016.

Showcasing the best in educational design - including small and large classrooms, group study pods, outdoor courtyards, laboratories, a medical library, and a simulation center - BCOM's curriculum blends a variety of learning formats. By incorporating everything from lecture to active learning and laboratory instruction, students develop critical skills that will ensure their success in all medical fields.

In addition to its comprehensive learning spaces, BCOM offers a central courtyard to encourage students and faculty to socialize, relax during breaks, and connect with the surrounding environment. The grounds and building are designed in the Spanish Renaissance architectural style to visually connect it with NMSU, which also features Spanish Renaissance architecture.

The seven-acre, three-story osteopathic medical school is located within NMSU's Arrowhead Business & Research Park. Through BCOM's affiliation with NMSU, students benefit from NMSU's student life services and joint research opportunities. The public-private partnership is a new model to improve healthcare, education, and the economy. It is expected to serve approximately 600 students by the year 2020.
