According to annual research conducted by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), nearly 15% of US households experienced food insecurity in 2020. That’s over 38 million people, including 12 million children, who experienced a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. [i]
Data collected between 2018 and 2020 reveals that southern states show a higher-than-average rate of food insecurity. In New Mexico alone, 26% of children experienced food insecurity, up from pre-COVID-19 levels of 22%.
Before the start of the pandemic, the overall food insecurity rate had reached its lowest point since it began to be measured in the 90s, but those improvements were upended by the pandemic. Feeding America projected that 42 million people, including 13 million children, would experience food insecurity in 2021, disproportionately affecting people of color and those living in rural communities. Roadrunner Food Bank of New Mexico, a Feeding America member, is the largest non-profit dedicated to solving food insecurity in New Mexico. As a food distribution hub, they provide food to hundreds of food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and regional food banks around the state. Every week, 70,000 hungry children, seniors, and families are reached through this statewide hunger relief network. [iii]
D/P/S is thankful to have partnered with Roadrunner Food Bank (RRFB) for the past several years. In 2020, our staff volunteered time alongside Bradbury Stamm Construction to design and build a more flexible and efficient lobby for the nonprofit. Late that same year, with the support of a company match, D/P/S team members raised over $9,000 in a food drive for RRFB.
This holiday season our team, again with a company match, raised over $15,000 and several food donations to help ease food insecurity in Southern New Mexico. In addition to the company match, CEO Benjamin Gardner, matched 50 cents on every dollar raised.
"I am immensely proud of our staff’s generosity, caring, and commitment to helping our community and state fight food insecurity. I am also very grateful that we have such a well-run and effective institution, the Roadrunner Food Bank, leading the charge in our fight against hunger. They deserve all, the support we can give them." - Benjamin Gardner, CEO
We are honored to partner with Roadrunner Food Bank to provide healthy food to people struggling with hunger.
