NMASLA Honors Two D/P/S Landscape Architects

Congratulations to landscape architects, Mimi Burns and Jitka Dekojova for receiving 2021 recognition awards from The New Mexico Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. Mimi received the Professional Distinction Award for her exemplary professional achievements contributing to the advancement of landscape architecture. Jitka received an Outstanding Professional Service Award recognizing her sustained pro-bono service to advance the profession.

Mimi Burns, ASLA, LEED AP, WELL AP, SITES AP, strives to create memorable, resilient places for her clients and their communities that connect people to nature. Her designs evolve from each site - reflecting the project’s unique historical, cultural, and environmental context.

Since 1989, Mimi has diligently worked side-by-side with planners, architects, engineers, developers, and visionaries to advocate for sustainable planning and design solutions that provide resilience and wellness benefits for communities across the Southwest.

"I'm grateful to NMASLA and all of the clients, colleagues, and coworkers who educated and collaborated with me over the years." - Mimi Burns

Trained as a landscape architect and an environmental planner, Jitka Dekojova, ASLA, SITES AP, balances both aesthetics and ecology in landscape design. While emphasizing adaptive reuse, urban food production, and the use of greywater systems in landscapes, Jitka also takes into account the ephemeral phenomenological aspects of the urban environment: the need for visually pleasing elements and details, the joy of unexpected discovery in everyday urbanism, and the vibrancy a diverse mix of people bring to urban spaces.

Jitka has demonstrated a passion for growing the landscape architecture community in New Mexico, and has worked year after year to build upon the values that the founders of NMASLA originally established.

"This award really belongs to everyone ever serving on the NMASLA executive committee - this a great team and I am grateful to be part of it." - Jitka Dekojova
