ICOM Receives ENR Mountain States Award for Best Project in Higher Education

October 18, 2018

Engineering News Record (ENR) selected Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine, designed by Dekker/Perich/Sabatini and built by Engineered Structures Inc., for Best Project and Judges' Special Recognition in Higher Education/Research.

The Project

The three-story Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine (ICOM) is an L-shaped facility surrounding a courtyard used year-round by students, faculty and staff. The college is situated adjacent to Idaho State University’s Health Sciences Center in Meridian, Idaho and provides a medical school in an under served region. Once established, the school will provide a steady stream of new physicians that will provide care in Idaho, northern Utah, eastern Washington and Oregon, and Western Montana and Wyoming.

The design team’s challenge on this 90,000sf project was to build it on schedule while many of the college’s key programming decisions were still in flux. The academic program, accreditation, student recruitment and facilities were all being developed concurrently from scratch. Each element had its own timeline, and the ICOM building had to be designed and built in the relatively short time frame of 14 months. The team sequenced construction around the evolving program. The newly hired staff continued to develop academic programs well into construction, driving design changes that were coordinated and implemented on the job site.

As a privately funded project, the design had to blend amenities of an academic building with the aesthetics of a hotel and the economy of a commercial office. Among the key features are a 50-ft glass curtain wall system, an over-sized open lobby and a suspended stair that connects all three levels.

ICOM includes a large lobby/gathering space, admissions, library, simulation spaces, osteopathic manual manipulation lab, simulation suite, lecture halls, small group study rooms, and a number of student lounge and support spaces.

The design team coordinated multiple milestones for each element that enabled crews to complete ICOM on time and budget.
