ENR Southwest announced their Best Projects awards, honoring Bernalillo High School with an award of merit in the K-12 Education category.
Bernalillo High School's multi-phase campus renovation replaced the majority of the school's existing facilities with new state-of-the-art classrooms, a robust Career Technical Education program, and a grand canopy entrance that creates a strong, modern identity for the "Bernalillo Spartans".
Because the campus remained occupied throughout construction, the renovation and addition occurred in three phases. The process began with a master plan that carefully addressed phasing of new construction, demolition, and renovation, as well as improved vehicular circulation and plans for future expansion.
During construction, the general contractor implemented a Total Robotic Station, regular drone flyovers, and other on-site technology. Access to technology in the field helped reduce errors and improved coordination on the complex project, which required 35 subcontractors on site.
The resulting campus offers a new Academic Classroom building and Career Technical Education (CTE) building, which are oriented around a large student courtyard. Among its successes, the new design promotes school pride, provides high-tech classrooms where students have access to laptops and Wi-Fi, and introduces a variety of CTE programs to promote career exploration.
