2017 NAIOP Awards Honor Projects, Developers, and Leaders

Albuquerque Rapid Transit wins NAIOP Chairman's Award

NAIOP New Mexico, a commercial real estate group, celebrated the 2017 Awards of Excellence with a packed room of developers, architects, contractors, and members of the building community. D/P/S is proud to have contributed to nine award-winning projects, including the Chairman's Award.

Chairman's Award: Albuquerque Rapid Transit and Mayor Richard Berry
Albuquerque's new bus rapid transit system and former Mayor Richard J. Berry received top honors from the NAIOP commercial real estate group. Cited as a "game-changer" and one of the city's most transformative infrastructure projects, Albuquerque Rapid Transit (ART) increases the utility of Central Avenue and consists of an all-electric bus fleet. Mayor Berry was also honored for his leadership in moving the project forward.

DaVita Sunport Healthcare Center, winner of 2017 NAIOP Eagle Award

Eagle Award: DaVita Sunport Healthcare Center, Medical

Taking full advantage of the prominent freeway visibility, the new flagship clinic reinforces DaVita Medical Group’s brand and is designed around Lean workflow and process improvement that will propel them to industry-wide best practice. The clinic is designed around a flexible pod with open and collaborative workspace between exam areas and separate patient circulation. Because provider and patient circulation areas are separated, the multidisciplinary care team can discuss treatment plans without compromising patient privacy. Meanwhile patient circulation focuses more on hospitality and creating a comfortable environment.

Bernalillo High School, winner of 2017 NAIOP Eagle Award

Eagle Award: Bernalillo High School, Education Renovation

The renovation of Bernalillo High School was completed in three phases and focused on improving the school's identity, community use, energy efficiency, academics, and career exploration. A grand canopy entrance opens to the new two-story academic and administration building with a cyber cafe, robust technology, and flexible classrooms. The adjacent, one-story career technical education building encourages career exploration and also houses the cafeteria and Black Box Theater. The renovation consolidated 200,000sf to an efficient 131,371sf and incorporates both traditional and modern materials to redefine an urban contemporary school image.

Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM)

Eagle Award: Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine, Education New Construction

To address the shortage of physicians in Southern New Mexico, El Paso, and the border region, this state-of-the-art medical school provides a holistic learning environment with specialized spaces, including a simulation center, clinical skills suite, and high-tech virtual anatomy laboratories. In addition, casual break areas and an inviting courtyard create "collision" spaces that promote interaction between students and faculty and greatly enhance the student experience.

Shiwi Ts'ana Elementary School

Eagle Award: Shiwi Ts'ana Elementary School, Education New Construction

Zuni Public School District consolidated two existing elementary schools into a new building for a Pre-K to 5 program to address state adequacy standards, increase operational efficiency, and share core facilities. The new school and site features are oriented to maximize views to a culturally significant mountain located near the site. The welcoming design reflects Zuni culture and history, and includes outdoor performance spaces, gardens, and ovens for community use.

Lobo Rainforest at Innovate ABQ

Eagle Award: Lobo Rainforest at Innovate ABQ, Multifamily

Lobo Rainforest at Innovate ABQ is the beginning of a four-phase, master-planned innovation district located on the University of New Mexico’s satellite campus in downtown Albuquerque. The six-story, mixed-use student housing building takes a one-stop-shop approach to reactivate the UNM satellite campus and support the local economy through business startups. Five levels of student housing sit atop ground level offices, common areas, and fabrication labs where students, entrepreneurs, investors, researchers, public enterprises, and private companies can collaborate and accelerate the commercialization of intellectual capital.

Hotel Chaco Courtyard

Eagle Award: Hotel Chaco, Hospitality

D/P/S provided planning and landscape architecture services for this new 118-room boutique hotel located in the historic Sawmill District, adjacent to Albuquerque's historic Old Town. The hotel and property are designed to offer visitors an authentic New Mexico experience inspired by the beauty, history, and culture of Chaco Canyon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in northern New Mexico. The site design is intended to create a memorable and unique atmosphere from the moment visitors enter the property.

Cabelas - Legacy @ Journal Center

Eagle Award: Cabela's - Legacy @ Journal Center, Retail

D/P/S provided planning and entitlements services for Cabela's located in the mixed-use, 21-acre development called Legacy @ Journal Center. Cabela's - an outdoor retailer that operates stores throughout the U.S. - anchors the development, which will include other retail, restaurants, and apartments.

Safelite Customer Care Center

Award of Merit: Safelite Customer Care Center, Retail

Safelite AutoGlass opened its newest and largest customer care center in Rio Rancho in an existing 95,000sf building that was originally designed as a SPRINT call center. The renovation not only provided more than 1,000 open office work stations to support the company’s positive growth, but also included new finishes to reinforce Safelite’s brand, a complete re-roof and mechanical upgrade, additional parking, a renovated lobby, and new employee amenities. Amenities include bullpen areas for trainings, mother’s rooms, prayer rooms, and an employee lounge and patio with views to the Sandia Mountains.
