Mariposa East Commons

High Desert Development commissioned Dekker Perich Sabatini to design a "21st Century New Mexico landmark" to establish design guidelines for the town center of their new Mariposa community. As the first building in the development's commercial section, Mariposa East Commons Office Building sets a vocabulary for design, and responds to climatic, social, and historical conditions in the southwest via a modern interpretation. Mariposa East Commons also provides the community with an example of sustainability, becoming LEED Certified by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Simple form, optimal solar orientation, shading and views, natural daylighting, and contrast of materials provides a fresh interpretation of the New Mexico vernacular, rooted in Anasazi tradition, and a strong sense of place. The building meets a mixed-use challenge, encompassing leasable retail space on the first floor and office space on the second.
