New Mexico Junior College - Phase l & ll

D/P/S began working with the New Mexico Junior College years ago to assist them in developing a new campus “architectural style”. The previous campus architecture consisted of simple monotone brick buildings with flat roofs, and low ceilings. We worked with NMJC to develop a new style of simple stucco and exposed metal elements with areas of limestone walls to create a new style that is in context with the surrounding environment in southeastern New Mexico.

The New Mexico Junior College Student Apartments are wood framed construction with concrete slab-on-grade foundations. The primary exterior building finishes are designed to complement the character of the Western Heritage Center and the Ben Alexander Center, two adjacent buildings that were also designed by D/P/S. A limestone veneer has been added at strategic locations to enhance the dignity of the buildings. Steel columns with decorative guardrails line the central open air breezeways. Skylights with open light wells open up the central breezeway and provide protection from the elements. The site landscape includes drought tolerant vegetation to help reduce the use of water on site.
