New Mexico Highlands University recently completed new student housing project, the first built on campus in 40 years, combines the historic Spanish Colonial architectural style with Sustainable Design strategies.  It also revitalizes a patchwork of unused sites on the campus into one new facility in the heart of the student housing core, enhancing the visual and pedestrian connections to the greater campus.  The project is slated for LEED® Silver certification and adheres to the schools growth strategy for meeting the changing expectations of students.

Comprised of one, two and four bedroom plans, the suites offer private bedrooms with bathrooms shared between two students.  Living areas and kitchenettes are shared by occupants while entry and bedroom doors include electronic locks with card key access for enhanced privacy and security. Multiple lounge, laundry and study areas are dispersed throughout the building’s common areas to encourage student gathering and interaction.

This project is designed to use 50% less water and 24% less energy.   An underground cistern was also incorporated into the design to capture and store roof runoff to reduce the amount of potable water used for irrigation.  Common areas have occupancy sensors which automatically turn off lights when the areas are unoccupied to reduce energy consumption.
