Many students are enrolled in science, arts, economics and history courses at the College of Santa Fe. These students are always encouraged to think in terms of global issues. When the college realized they needed additional student housing to accommodate their upperclassmen, they decided to practice what they preach. “We went with environmentally friendly construction because the campus and our community is concerned about the quality of our environment and the preservation of our natural resources,” states Dr. Jim Fries, the college’s president. Dekker/Perich/Sabatini responded by working with a college design committee to design a student housing facility that draws upon local history, has an artistic feeling, is environmentally sensitive and promotes a strong sense of community among students.
Healthy housing is something we recognize as a living tool for students. These elements do not necessarily cost more, but they do take more thought during the design process. New Mexico is a state that has always led the charge in alternative approaches to building systems, and D/P/S designed this project to ensure that learning does not end in the classroom and environmental awareness is a value conveyed by design.
