Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange

St. Paul the Apostle | St. Francis of Assisi | St. Albert the Great | St. Columban | Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange

This California Mission Style chapel was renovated to address earthquake deficiencies in the structure and to embrace theology of Vatican II liturgy.

The chapel's goal was to preserve a building that was vital to the historical integrity of Orange, California and a significant spiritual center for the surrounding community

The existing intricate wood ceiling, chandeliers, columns with arched canopies at side aisles and terrazzo floors were retained and refurbished as needed. A baptismal font was placed into the reconfigured worship space to allow ceremonial processions to pass between font and entrance. The altar is placed to image the assembly gathered around the altar, with the ambo completing the circle. An adjoining Eucharistic Reservation Chapel is separated from the worship space by a free-standing glass wall to allow unobstructed interior views and provide acoustic privacy.

Robert Habiger served as liturgical design consultant providing educational sessions on liturgy and places for worship and devotion. Robert collaborated with the architect on overall design of chapel interior and assisted community in selection of artists.
