An elegant solution to a modern challenge: Mesa del Sol cellular tower

Dekker/Perich/Sabatini has created an elegant solution to a modern challenge: designing wireless telecommunications facilities that contribute to, rather than detract from, the landscape. Expansive views available in the desert southwest, make these facilities highly visible. At Mesa del Sol in Albuquerque NM, Dekker/Perich/Sabatini, with support from master developer Forest City Covington, treated the new wireless facility as a large sculpture in an expansive landscape.

With help from the design/build firm, Anthem Telecom, Dekker/Perich/Sabatini created a design for the 90’ tall facility that is ethereal and whimsical; light and durable. After substantial deliberation, agencies gave approval for the higher than normal structure, convinced that a 90’ facility would minimize the number of facilities community-wide. What was potentially an unsightly modern necessity, has become a community icon.
