Building orientation and circulation on this gently sloping site were studied at length by the design-build team, Dekker/Perich/Sabatini and Bradbury Stamm General Contractors, in order to maximize views, daylighting, and the ease of vehicular circulation, while minimizing the excavation issues of the surface basalt formations, drainage from adjacent soccer fields, and prevailing winds.
The stepped building layout integrates with the natural topography of the site and reduces the need for excessive site work. The project is organized into two separate buildings; the first housing classrooms and administrative offices and the second housing the gymnasium and cafeteria. This arrangement allows for the main classroom wings and administrative areas to be isolated during after-hours or weekend community gatherings and events. Courtyard areas between the buildings act as a large outdoor classroom/gathering space and provide independent controlled access to the gymnasium and cafeteria.
This Design-Build Fast Track project was designed and constructed in 16 months. The169,000 square-foot middle school serves 1,200 students. The project achieved the U.S.Green Building Council’s (USGBC) LEED for Schools Gold certification.
